More Life Lessons From My Dog

I always tell my clients that all the answers are inside of them, and I’m just here to help them find those answers. Sometimes, though, it can be hard for humans to access that incredible source of wisdom we all carry within us. I think we all need to be more like dogs!

Hello, and welcome to Quantum Waves of Wellness. I’m your host, Dr. Paula Apro, and today I want to talk about that amazing intuitive sense we all possess, even if we don’t always recognize it.

One of my favorite modalities is called the Body Code™. It’s a tool I use to explore the potential underlying stressors associated with a person’s symptoms. It never ceases to amaze me when I follow what feels like a spiderweb of connections, exploring related mental and emotional imbalances that may be contributing to a person’s health challenges.

Clients are often amazed by the connections we explore together, but I don’t see it as me figuring everything out. My approach involves using muscle testing to explore information I believe may be held in the subconscious mind, almost like accessing a personal data bank.

I know it can be hard to wrap your head around the idea that we might already have an inner sense of what’s going on with us and what we need to explore to feel better.

Maybe this is what we call our sixth sense: that feeling of just knowing.

I experience this intuitive sense in my own life just about every day. But I have a story that illustrates it so perfectly, and it involves my favorite subject: my dog, Tucker.

Last week, we were kayaking on the harbor, as we often do. Tucker is a real champ when it comes to kayaking. He’s normally as cool as a cucumber, sitting back and peacefully taking in the views.

But on this particular day, something was different.

His behavior was noticeably unusual, and I could tell something was up. Instead of sitting in his designated spot on our tandem sea kayak, he was pacing back and forth and shaking his head. That’s always a dead giveaway that he’s nervous or excited.

He was yawning, too, which is another sign I associate with his stress. And then he started pushing his nose into the back of my shoulder, almost as if to say, “Come on, Mom. Start paddling!”

At the time, we were leisurely floating downwind, letting the breeze slowly push us back toward shore. After all, it was October in Maine, and we knew we probably wouldn’t have many more kayaking days left this season. We wanted to take our time and enjoy every minute.

But Tucker had other plans.

I noticed that he kept looking off to the left of the boat, where the clouds were starting to gather and darken. His little nose was raised in the air, sniffing like crazy.

I started to wonder if he knew something we didn’t. So we took his advice and started paddling. Quickly.

And wouldn’t you know it? By the time we made it back to the dock, sprinkles were starting to fall. Ten minutes after we got home, the sky opened up, thunder cracked loudly, and boy, did we get a downpour!

Now, Tucker has always hated the rain. He started his life as a stray, living on the streets alone for over a year. I can only imagine what he experienced during that time and how uncomfortable it must have been to endure the elements without shelter.

In fact, this little guy refuses to go outside to do his business if it’s raining. His dislike of bad weather seems to make him especially alert to changes in the environment.

And I think I’m a little like Tucker when it comes to sensing when people around me aren’t feeling well.

Early in my life, I experienced the trauma of worrying about a loved one and watching her suffer in pain. I think that experience made me particularly sensitive to the distress of others. Now, if someone around me gets so much as a paper cut, I feel it!

But here’s the thing: I believe we all have an intuitive capacity, even though we may experience it differently. Some people seem naturally more attuned to their instincts, while life experiences can also shape how sensitive we become to the people and situations around us.

I wish I could tell you exactly how to flip a switch and turn this ability on. But I can tell you something that may be getting in the way: we can’t learn to trust our own inner wisdom if we automatically dismiss it or always look outside ourselves for validation.

Think about it. Almost everyone has experienced a gut feeling at some point in their life. Maybe you had a feeling that you needed to make a big change. Maybe something just didn’t feel right about a situation, even though you couldn’t explain why.

Some people act on those feelings. Others ignore them, question them, or immediately look for an outside source to tell them what to do.

Maybe you turn to astrology, a reading, or another divination tool because you want confirmation that what you’re sensing is real.

And there’s nothing wrong with exploring different tools. But what if we gave ourselves a little more credit before looking outside ourselves for the answer?

What if we paused long enough to ask, “What am I sensing? What am I feeling? And what might this be telling me?”

I think that’s a powerful place to start.

And when it comes to your health….it seems that most people run to a doctor for a ‘medical test’ to get answers to their problems. Tell me, how many of you actually got any real answers to WHY you have your issues? I’m betting none. Because medical tests can never tell you why you developed a certain illness. Doctors can guess, but why would you ever believe their guesses more than your own intuition?

And that brings me to another story.

Last week, my husband told me that he had woken up with lower back pain for three consecutive days. I was actually proud of him because his first response was to ask, “What have I done differently that might be contributing to this pain?”

I’ve certainly encouraged him to think of unexpected changes in his body as messages worth paying attention to. Now, if you fell down the stairs yesterday and woke up with back pain today, there’s an obvious physical event that could explain it. But when a change seems to come out of nowhere, it can be helpful to look at what else has changed in our lives.

So, back to my husband.

He couldn’t think of anything he had done differently physically. Then he mentioned, “Well, last week I started taking those new vitamins you gave me.”

Bingo! That caught my attention.

He had gone a couple of months without taking any supplements, and now he was taking six different ones. I wondered whether one of them might be worth investigating.

Knowing that the kidneys filter out what the body does not absorb I quickly ran to his vitamin box. After not taking any supplements for a couple of months, he started taking 6 different vitamins a week ago.

So I muscle tested him for each and every vitamin and sure enough, one of them tested very negatively. It happened to be Tumeric, which shocked me. And here’s a side note, I also got inspired to test my own vitamins and guess what? I also tested very poorly for Tumeric. I’m betting their was a quality issue with those particular pills. They went straight into the garbage.

It is now 4 days since he stopped taking the Tumeric and he has not had that lower back pain at all.  It took me less than five minutes to uncover the issue because I was able to directly ask his body via energy what the issue was. Do you think you would have gotten those speedy and accurate results walking into a doctor’s office? Hmm, I’m betting not.

I am just so eternally grateful for my superpower, and I encourage anybody listening to try to give yourself more credit for your own gut feelings. Trust them. Follow them. Give yourself some time before discounting what you think you know, because you never know just how much you know and how powerful you may be.
